Morro Castle (Spanish fort at the entrance)

a Spanish fort at the entrance to the harbor of Havana, Cuba; its dungeons are said to have been the prisons of many convicted of political Offenses. Also an imposing fortification on the cliffs overlooking Santiago Bay, Cuba. It was in sight of this fort and under fire of its guns that Lieutenant Hobson and seven men of the United MORSE States navy, on June 3, 1898, sank the "Merrimac" at the entrance to the harbor to prevent the Spanish fleet from escaping. On their capture, while attempting to regain their vessels, the men were imprisoned for some time in Morro.
