Mount Desert
a mountainous island in the Atlantic, belonging to Hancock co., Me., off the coast; was settled by the French in 1608. It is 14 miles long and 7 miles wide. Soames's Sound divides it nearly in two. Bar Harbor, Northeast and Southwest Harbors, Soamesville, Seal Cove, and East Eden are the villages. The island abounds in beautiful little lakes, and is a favorite summer resort. Pop. about 2,000.
