Negapatam
a seaport of British India, on the Coromandel coast, 180 miles S. by W. of Madras city. Originally a NEGRO Portuguese settlement, it was taken by the Dutch in 1660, and by the English in 1781. The port trades in cotton, livestock, ghi (exported), and spices, piece goods, coal, gunny bags (imported), chiefly with Burma, the Straits Settlements, and Ceylon. Pop. about 65,000.
