Newry
a port and parliamentary borough of Ireland on the Newry river; S. S. W. of Belfast. A canal connects it with Carlingford Lough and with Lough Neagh. The port does a large trade with Glasgow and Liverpool in cattle and other agricultural produce.
Flax spinning and weaving, with rope and sail making, tanning, and granitepolishing, are the industries. The place dates from the 12th century; its castle was taken by Edward Bruce in 1318.
