SIR WILLIAM (ROB- SIR WILLIAM (ROBwas born at Welbourne, Lincolnshire, England, in 1860 and was educated privately. In 1888 he became a lieutenant in , and in 1891 was railway transport officer in the Miranzai and Black Mountain Expeditions. In 1892-96 he was Staff Captain and D. A.

Q. M. G., Intelligence Branch, Simla, and in 1895, Intelligence Officer, Headquarters, he was severely wounded.

He was in the South Director of Military Operations in the African War in 1900 and was Assistant War Office, 1901-7. In 1907 he was A. Q. in 1910-13, Com- 1 ROBESPIERRE mandant, Staff College. In 1913-14 he was Director of Military Training at the War Office. In the World War he com- GENERAL SIR WILLIAM ROBERTSON manded the 1st Infantry Division and Chief of General Staff 1915-18, General Officer, Commander-in-Chief Eastern Command, 1918, Great Britain, 1918-19.
