Slovaks
the name of the Slavic inhabitants of North Hungary who in the 9th century formed the nucleus of the great Moravian kingdom, but who, after the bloody battle of Presburg (A. D. 907), were gradually subjugated by the Magyars. There are scattered settlements of Slovaks in Austria and Slavonia. They number about 2,500,000. The Slovaks, SMALL whose character probably comes nearest to that of the old Slavic type, travel in great numbers over Germany and Poland as peddlers. Their language is a dialect of the Bohemian.
