Stubbs (WILLIAM an English historian)

WILLIAM, an English historian; was born in Knaresborough, England, June 21, 1825; was educated at Ripon Grammar School, whence he proceeded to Oxford University and latterly became a fellow of Trinity College. In 1848 he was ordained, and became vicar of Navestock, Essex, in 1850. In 1862 he was appointed librarian of Lambeth Palace, in 1866 Professor of Modern History at Oxford, in 1869 curator of the STUBBS Bodleian Library, in 1875 rector of Cholderton, Wilts, in 1879 canon residentiary of St, Paul's, in 1884 bishop of Chester, and in 1888 bishop of Oxford. He edited many valuable historical works in the Rolls Series, including "Chronicles and Memorials of the reign of Richard I." (1864-1865); "Gesta Regis Henrici II." (1867); "Chronicle of Roger Hoveden" (1872-1873); "Memorials of St. Dunstan" (1874); and "Opera Radulphi de Diceto" (1876); his chief work the Constitutional History of England (1874- 1878), and many others. He was a member of various English and foreign learned societies. He died April 22, 1901.
