Suffolk (Maritime county of southeast)

a maritime county of southeast England. Area, 1,489 square miles. Pop. about 350,000 .

The county is divided into East and West Suffolk, the capital of the former being Ipswich (pop. about 75,000), and the capital of the latter Bury St. Edmunds (pop. about 17,500). The largest part of the county is flat, with marshes on its northwestern and northeastern borders. The Lark, the Gipping, and the tributaries of the Waveney and of the Stour are the chief streams. The soil is diversified and in many parts very productive for the ordinary crops.
