Terburg
or TERBORCH, GER- ARD, a Dutch genre painter; born in Zwolle, Holland, about 1617. His father, a historical painter, gave him his first lessons in painting. He continued his studies at Haarlem, and afterward visited Germany, Italy, Spain, England, and France. On the meeting of the Peace Congress at Münster in 1646, he painted the assembled plenipotentiaries, which is now in the National Gallery, London. He subsequently visited Madrid, London, and Paris, whence he returned to Overyssel, married, and became burgomaster of Deventer. His portraits and pictures of social life are remarkable for elegance, He excelled in painting textile fabrics, particularly satin and velvet. He died in Deventer Dec. 8, 1681.
TERCENTENNIAL EXPOSITION AT JAMESTOWN, an historic, military, naval and marine exhibition, commemorating the first permanent settlement of immigrants from the British Isles in America, on Hampton Roads, near Norfolk, Va., lasting from April 26 to Nov. 30, 1907. Buildings in colonial style were raised at Sewall's Point, covering an area of 400 acres, with three miles of waterfront. Exhibits of food products, machinery, manufactures of every kind, medicinal products, minerals and metals, and pertaining to the army, navy, liberal and fine arts, were housed in the buildings. There were scenic representations of life in early Virginia and an effort was made to reproduce conditions among TERCENTENNIAL EXPOSITION 301 to live. An Arts and Crafts Village showed colonial articles in fabrics, woods and metals. American history from the date of the Jamestown settlement was erected in a central position and an Auerected in a central position and an Aufestivals were held and attended by great festivals were held and attended by great uted by the Government, $50,000 of the sum being devoted to the erection of a monument commemorating the settle ment.
