Van Hise
CHAS. R., an American geologist; born in Fulton, Wis., May 29, 1857; was graduated at the University of Wisconsin in 1879, and was instructor there in metallurgy till 1883, when he was made assistant professor, becoming full professor in 1886. Two years later he accepted accepted the chair of geology in the same institution, and in 1892 was made non-resident Professor of Structural Geology at the University of Chicago.
He became director of the Lake Superior division of the United States Geological Survey. He was elected president of the University of Wisconsin in 1903, serving until 1918. He was the joint author of the memoirs "On Secondary Enlargements of Mineral Fragments in Certain Rocks" (1884); "The Penokee-Gogebic Iron-bearing Series of Michigan and Wisconsin" (1892); "Correlation Papers, Archean and Algonkian" (1892); "Principles of North American Pre-Cambrian Geology" (1896); "Concentration and Control" (1912). He died Nov. 19, 1918.
