Brucine, or Brucia
Is obtained from the same sources as strychnine, Alkaloids. Substances of a vegeta- and resembles it in many respects, but is analogous to t the alkaline bases, in which the medicinal activity of the plants in which they are found appear to reside. (Cooley.) Among the natural organic bases, or alkaloids, the following are the readily soluble in all strengths of alcohol, and insoluble in water. Brucine turns nitric acid red, which becomes violet on the addition of protochloride of tin.
