Colpin's India-Rubber Varnish
India-rubber in small pieces, washed and dried, are fused for 3 hours in a close vessel, on a gradually heated sand-bath. On removing from the sand-bath, open the vessel and stir for 10 minutes, then close again, and repeat the fusion on the following day, until small globules appear on the surface. Then strain through a wire sieve. 2953. Metallic Varnish, or Varnisher's Amalgam. Melt 4 ounces grain tin (see Index) with 1 ounce bismuth; add 1 ounce quicksilver, and stir till cold; then grind it very fine with white of egg or varnish, and apply this metallic varnish to the figure to be coated.
