Bible Terms and Customs: Porters
Porters. Porters were the doorkeepers and police of the Temple. They were divided into companies under the command of the captain of the Ten.ple. They were on duty day and night. It took 20 of them to shut the great brazen gate. Pottage was made of red lentiles boiled in water.
Prayer. The ordinary attitude of prayer was standing with the arms stretched forward, palms upward, and the face raised to heaven. Priest. In patriarchal times the head of each family was its priest, and the chief of the tribe its high priest.
Property under the Hebrew law could not pass out of the family. If seized by creditors it reverted to the owner in the following year of Jubilee.
Prophet. A prophet is one who speaks for another.
