Germany is very rich in mineral products and mining is carried on in nearly all divisions. Gold and Silver are found in the Hartz Mountains, the first in limited quantities only; iron in all the mountain ranges, especially those of Westphalia and Rhenish Prussia; tin, lead, zinc and cobalt in Silesia and Saxony. The production of raw iron is over 3,000,000 tons per annum.

Coal abounds in Rhenish Prussia, Westphalia, Upper Silesia and Saxony, and there is a plentiful supply of building stone of all grades. Mineral springs are abundant and those of Ems, Wiesbaden, Kissingen, Homburg, Selters, Salzbrunn, Baden-Baden and others enjoy a world-wide reputation. There are many salt springs, and the manufacture of that staple is carried on extensively. The coast fisheries of the Baltic and the North Sea are a source of large revenue. Germany raises, for home consumption and export, cattle, horses and sheep. Of agricultural and orchard products exported, the chief are tobacco, hops (in Bavaria and Brunswick), and the fruit of the vine, the chief seat of its culture being along the Rhine, Moselle, Necker and Main, and in Rhenish Bavaria, where the annual yield sometimes exceeds 20,000,000 gallons.
