THE FRENCH REPUBLICAN CALENDAR. - This, although reckoned from the 22nd Sept. 1792, was not introduced until the 22nd Nov. 1793. It remained in use only till the 31st Dec. 1805. The Gregorian Calendar was restored Jan. 1. 1806 (Nivôse 10, Year XIV.). The months varied in different years, thus Nivîse I commenced Dec. 21st in 1793, Dec. 22nd in 1795, Dec. 21st in 1796, December 22nd in 1799, Dec. 23d in 1803, and Dec. 22nd in 1804 and 1805. The following are the dates for the year 1804, the last complete year of the Calendar :- Vendémaire (Vintage), 23 Sept. to Oct. 22:
Brumaire Frimaire Nivôse Pluviôse Ventôse (Foggy), 23 Oct. to Nov. 22. (Sleety), 22 Nov. to Dec. 21. (Snowy), 22 Dec. to Jan. 21. (Rainy.), 21 Jan. to Feb. 20 (Windy), 20 Feb. to Mar. 19.
Floréal Prairial (Budding), 22 Mar. to Apr. 21. (Flowery), 21 Apr. to May 20. (Pasture), 21 May to June 20.
Messidor (Harvest), 20 June to July 19.
Thermidor (Hot), 20 July to Aug. 19.
Fructidor (Fruit), 19 Aug. to Sep. 18.
The months were divided into three decades of ten days each, but to make up the 365, five were added at the end of September; (Primidi), dedicated to Virtue, (Duodi) to Genius; (Tridi) to Labor; (Quartidi) to Opinion; and the fifth (Quintidi) to Rewards. To leap-year, called Olympic, a sixth day, the 22d or 23d of September (Sextidi), "Jour de la Révolution," was added.
MONACO - PRINCIPALITY OF. Heir - Albert, born November 13, 1848; married 1869, firstly, Lady Mary Douglas-Hamilton, daughter of the 11th Duke of Hamilton. (The Pope declared the marriage a nullity, 1880.) Secondly, Alice Dutchess Douzer de Richlieu.
A minature Principality on the Mediterranean, between France and Italy, including the town of Monaco, with its gambling establishment and the surrounding country, and having an area of eight square miles, with 12,548 inhabitants. Olive oil, lemons, oranges, perfumes, liqueurs, and pottery are exported. There is an army of 126 men.
