Femme couverte, fam koo vairt. A married woman.

Femme seule, fam sul. An unmarried woman.

Fête, fait. A festival.

Fête champêtre, fait shang peytr. A rural feast. An entertainment in the open air. Feuilleton, fuh yuh tong. (Lit.) a fly leaf. A novel or a story in a French newspaper, or that part of the paper which is usually devoted to light literature or criticism.

Feuilletonistes. - ist. The writers of feuilletons.

Fiasco. Failure in a musical performance; generally a ridiculous breakdown. Fiasco means literally a bottle or flask, and the allusion may be to the bursting of a bottle.

Fiat. "Let it be done." A command to do something.

Garde mobile, ghard mo beel. Soldiers whose services are not confined to one spot.. Gendarmes, hgang darm. Armed police.

Generalissimo. Commander-in-chief.

Goût, goo. Taste. Relish. Peculiar fancy.

Habeas corpus. (Lit.) have the body. A writ for delivering a person from false im-- prisonment, or for removing a person from one court to another. Habitué, ah bé too ay. One in the habit of frequenting a place. Hauteur, ho tur. Haughtiness.

Haut goût, ho goo.

High flavor. Relish. Good taste.

Haut ton, ho tong.

Used in reference to the higher classes of society. Belonging to the world of fashion.

Heureux hasard, uh ruh hah zar. A fortunate chance.
