AREA AND POPULATION, ETC. -Spain, exclusive of the less remote islands, consists of 49 provinces with an area of 196,173 sq. m. The population 17,358,404. Besides the peninsula itself, Spain includes the Balearic and the Canary Islands, with a population of 500,000. Spain's colonial possessions, which formerly embraced nearly the whole of America, are reduced to Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Philippine Islands, with scattered settlements in the Atlantic and Indian archipelago, and a small strip of territory in Northern Africa. The area is 167,087 sq. m., and the population about 8,500,000. The staple articles of export from Cuba and Porto Rico is raw sugar, tobacco, and cigars; while from the Philippine Islands are exported sugar, exported sugar, hemp, and tobacco.
