The native coins are now superseded by dollars, etc., minted at Osaka. The silver yen of 100 sens, weighing 416 troy grains, 9-10ths fine, is equal to the Mexican dollar, or 4s. 2d. sterling. The yens or dollars are also represented in gold; the piece of 10 yens, weighing 257.20 troy grains, 9-10ths fine, is equal to the American eagle. Accounts, etc., at Yokohama are represented in dollars; and the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank now (1874) issues notes for 100, 50, 10, and 5 Mexican dollars. But Japanese use the Government paper called "ken-satzu" and "yen-satzu." The kin (or Japanese catty) of 160 momme = 1/3 lb. avoird.; and 100 kins = 1 tan or pecul = 133/3 lbs. avoird. The koku = 5 Imp, bushels. The cloth tsune sasi = = 14 English foot. The syo = 3.83 gallons; pyo of rice = 35 syo. The tan of 300 pou = 2.68 acres. Ri or league = 4275 yards. JAVA.

Accounts are stated in Netherlands florins or guilders of 100 cents. The In value of the florins is IS. 8d. sterling. A variety of coins are in circulation. In 1828, a bank with a capital of 2,000,000 fl. was established at Batavia, which issues paper of two kinds, namely,-notes varying from 25 fl. to 1000 fl. payable in silver, and smaller notes payable in copper. = The ell = 273/4, and the foot = 12.36 Imp. inches. The common liquid measure is the kanne; 33 kannes = 13 English wine gallons, or 100 Imp. gallons; a leaguer of arrack 396 rands 160 English wine gallons, or 133/3 Imp. gallons; a leaguer of wine is 360 rands. The ordinary weights here, as well as throughout all the Dutch possessions in India, are those of CHINA; the pecul, however, instead of 133/3 lbs. avoirdupois, is reckoned at 125 Dutch troy lbs. 135 lbs. 10 oz. avoirdupois, but commonly estimated 136 lbs. avoirdupois; the coyang of rice = 3581 lbs. avoirdupois; the timbang of rice = 5 peculs or 10 sacks. Gold and silver are weighed by the Dutch troy mark of 9 reals = 3798 troy grains. MALTA.
