The power of the wedge is as the length of the two sides to the thickness. The diameter of the wheel of a pulley should be five times its thickness. The pin one-twelfth, and one-twelfth on each side allowed for play. The Mule of Crompton superseded the Jenny of Hargrave, of which it was an extension, and was so named by Crompton because Arkwright's spinning frame was worked by a Horse-wheel, and Crompton's Mule was intermediate between that and a Jenny.

Water is the best conductor of heat upwards and the worst downwards. Iron at a white heat keeps water at a distance and generates less steam, as I to 15, than a lower temperature, called the evaporating point. Weaving is performed by stretching threads generally horizontally, called the warp; and then raising or depressing certain portions of the warp threads by treadles so as to pass between them a thread called a weft, by means of a shuttle to which the weft is fastened.

Cotton was first brought to England from Cyprus and Smyrna in 1600, and made into fustian, dimity, etc.

Until the invention of the steam engine, water wheels and windmills were the only inanimate powers. They are undershot when carried round by a current in which the floats dip; and overshot when the water from above falls upon the floats. In windmills the force of wind at 10 miles an hour is 1½ a pound per square foot; at 14 miles it is 1 lb.; at 20 miles, 2 lbs.; at 25 miles, 3 lbs.; 35 miles, 6 lbs.; 100 miles, nearly 50 lbs. To obtain this force the sails must be inclined to the axis from 72° to 75°.
