The Continent of Africa: Lake

LAKES.-The lakes of this country are closely associated with the continental river system, especially in the case of the Nile. Lake Tanganyika was discovered by Burton and Speke in 1858. It is 480 m. long, and has a breadth of from 10 to 60 m.; altitude above the sea, 2711 ft.; and its waters are pure and deep. The Victoria Nyanza is 200 m. N.-E. of Lake Tanganyika. Its height above the ocean is 3800 ft. The Albert Nyanza, which receives the waters of the Victoria, is 150 m. long and 2720 ft. above sea level. The entire region is dotted with vast inland seas, which the successive explorations of Livingstone and Stanley have verified. In Soudan is Lake Tchad or Tsad, 200 m. long and very shallow; in Abyssinia Lake Dembea is the centre of a plain 6000 ft. above the sea; and Lake N'gami. Lake Nyassa is about 300 m. from the E. coast and N. of the Zambesi delta, with which it is connected. Its height above the sea is 1500 ft.; its width from 20 to 60 m., and its entire length about 200 m. Its waters are very deep.
