2026 Editor's Note: While this text identifies the Mount St. Gothard as the world's longest tunnel, it has since been surpassed by the Gotthard Base Tunnel . Modern engineering continues to push these limits with the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel , which is projected to become the world’s longest immersed tunnel connecting Denmark and Germany. This new link will utilize massive prefabricated concrete sections, each equivalent to the weight of 10 Eiffel Towers , to reduce travel times between the two nations by half. (Ed: GG 2026-08-08)
