The Mexicans, under General Aristá, numbering eight thousand men, or about three times the American force, attacked Taylor on the plains of Palo Alto. Taylor routed them with a loss of only nine men killed. Next day, General Taylor gained a signal victory at Resaca de la Palma. 1846-May 11, Congress declared war against Mexico. 1846-On September 24, General Taylor, with a force of six thousand men, carried the city of Montery by assault, capturing its garrison of ten thousand troops. 1846-Iowa, the twenty-ninth state, was admitted to the Union December 28. Its name is of Indian origin, and means " Drowsy Ones." 1846-Conquest of New Mexico and California by Captain John C. Freemont, Commodores Sloat and Stockton, and General Kearney. 1847-On February 23, the Mexican General Santa Anna, with twenty thousand men, attacked a portion of General Taylor's force at Buena Vista. The flower of Taylor's troops had been removed to the aid of General Scott. After a fierce conflict which lasted the entire day, the Americans, though vastly outnumbered, won a signal victory. 1847-Capture of Vera Cruz by General Scott, after a fierce bombardment of four days' duration, March 29.
