The announcement in Washington of Polk's nomination in Baltimore was the first news ever sent by telegraph. 1845-In September the Mormons were expelled from Navoo City, Illinois, and their leader, or prophet, Joe Smith, was killed by a mob. 1845-Texas, which had won its independence from Mexico, applied for admission to the Union, April, 1844, and was received December 27, 1845. 1846-Battle of Palo Alto, May 8. A difficulty having arisen between the United States and Mexico touching the Texas boundary, General Taylor was ordered to occupy the disputed territory.
