Collier's New Encyclopedia (1921)
a city in Stark co., O.; on the Mahoning river and the Alliance and Northern and the Pennsylvania Co.'s railroads; 56 miles S. E. of Cleveland. It is in an agricultural region; is the seat of Mount Union College ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE (Methodist Episcopal); and has a National bank, manufactories of drop forgings, steam hammers, boilers, white lead, terra cotta ware, and agricultural implements, and daily, weekly, and monthly periodicals. Pop. (1900) 8,974; (1920) 21,603. ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE, FÉDÉRA- TION DE L', an association of societies organized in the United States and Canada in 1902. Its purpose is to promote the study of the French language, literature, arts, and history. A council composed of twenty directors meets five times yearly to supervise the affairs of the Federation. There are in the United States and Canada over 50 groups or circles which send delegates to the annual convention held in various cities. ALLIANCE ISRAÉLITE UNIVER- SELLE, an organization established in 1860 in Paris for the general benefit of the Jews throughout the world. Its original program included the emancipation of the Jews under oppressive laws and political disabilities. The movement spread until it became a great power. established in various Schools were Farm parts of Europe and Asia. schools were also established in Palestine. Normal schools for teachers are maintained in Paris. There are committees of the Alliance in New York and Philadelphia. It publishes monthly bulletins and semi-annual reports, torep gether with reports on special studies on subjects related to its work.
What Has Changed in the Last Century
When Collier's wrote this in 1921, Alliance had just grown to 21,603 people on the strength of drop forgings, steam hammers and boilers; the city peaked at roughly 27,000 residents around 1970 and has since slid back to about 21,000, with the heavy-industry base — including the Alliance Machine Company, famous for huge overhead cranes — largely gone. Mount Union College, listed here as Methodist Episcopal, is still the town's anchor but renamed the University of Mount Union in 2010. The other two entries on the page have fared differently: the Alliance Française federation still teaches French across North America, while the Alliance Israélite Universelle's school network across North Africa and the Middle East, described here as spreading through Europe and Asia, was mostly dismantled after 1948 as those Jewish communities emigrated, leaving the organisation centred on France and Israel.
