Aiton's Encyclopedia (1910)
as ka' ni-us, or Iulus, i-u'lus, in classical legend, the son of Aeneas and Creusa. As a child he accompanied his father in his wanderings after the Trojan War. Later he supported Aeneas in his wars with the Latins, succeeded him in the government of Latium, and founded the city of Alba Longa. His descendants ruled Alba for 420 years. They are called the Julii. See Aeneas ; Aeneid ; Troy 2026 Editor's Note: Ascanius, also called Iulus, mattered to Roman propaganda: Julius Caesar's family, the Julii , claimed descent from him — and so from his grandmother, the goddess Venus. a son of Æneas and Creusa, who accompanied his father in his flight from the burning of Troy, and landed in Italy. He ably supported Æneas in his war with the Latins, and_succeeded him in the government of Latium. He afterward built Alba Longa, to which he transferred his seat of government from Lavinium, and reigned there 38 years. His descendants ruled over Alba for 420 years.

Son of Aeneas and Creusa, was saved from the flames of Troy by his father, whom he accompanied in his voyage to Italy. He was afterward called Iulus. 2026 Editor's Note: Under his additional name Iulus, Ascanius was claimed as the particular ancestor of the gens Iulia, the family of Julius Caesar, and therefore a progenitor of the first line of Roman emperors, the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Gian Lorenzo Bernini created a life-sized marble sculpture depicting Aeneas carrying his father Anchises with young Ascanius following behind, completed around 1618–19 when Bernini was only twenty years old. This sculpture, now housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, depicts the scene from the Aeneid where Aeneas leads his family from burning Troy. (Ed: BR 2026-06-04)
