Today it lies wholly within Israel as Lake Kinneret, and since the National Water Carrier opened in 1964 it has been pumped as a national reservoir, with its level watched daily against a "black line" below which pumping is halted; drought years in the 2000s and 2010s dropped it to record lows before wet winters and desalination-fed water refilled it. Archaeology has also transformed the shoreline: in 1986 a drought exposed a first-century fishing boat in the mud near Ginosar, now conserved and displayed, and excavations at Capernaum and Magdala have uncovered synagogues and a harbour town unknown when Collier's wrote.
