What Has Changed in the Last Century

When Collier's wrote this in 1921, Jenner's vaccine was still being used against a disease that killed and disfigured people worldwide. Smallpox was the first human disease ever eradicated: the last natural case occurred in Somalia in 1977 and the World Health Organization declared the world free of it in 1980, after which routine vaccination was abandoned everywhere. One detail in the old account has also shifted: genetic work suggests the vaccinia virus used in modern vaccines is not simply cowpox as Jenner supposed, but a distinct virus closest to horsepox. Sir William Jenner's entry stands as written hus from typhoid remains one of the useful clinical distinctions of Victorian medicine.
