What Has Changed in the Last Century
Collier's in 1921 gave the dates confidently — birth 4 B.C., ministry begun A.D. 26, crucifixion A.D. 29 — and noted that nearly all churches except the Unitarians affirmed a divine and human nature. The traditional birth date around 4 B.C. is still widely held, but most scholars now place the crucifixion in A.D. 30 or 33, under Pontius Pilate, and treat the ministry's length as uncertain. The century since has been dominated by the historical-critical study of the Gospels and by manuscript finds Collier's could not know: the Nag Hammadi codices in 1945, including the Gospel of Thomas, and the Dead Sea Scrolls from 1947, which reshaped understanding of the Jewish world Jesus lived in. The doctrinal statement still describes mainstream Christian belief, though the confessional tone — "the only sinless man that has lived on earth" — is not how a reference work would put it today.
