What Has Changed in the Last Century
Both men were still living and active when Collier's wrote in 1921, and both stories have since ended. Julius Kahn stayed in Congress, chairing the House Military Affairs Committee, until his death in December 1924; his widow Florence Prag Kahn won his San Francisco seat in 1925 and became the first Jewish woman to sit in Congress, serving until 1937. Otto Kahn, described here only as a banker and wartime financial adviser, is remembered today chiefly as the great patron and board chairman of New York's Metropolitan Opera and as the builder of Oheka Castle on Long Island; he died in 1934, and the firm he joined in 1897, Kuhn, Loeb & Co., lost its independence when it merged with Lehman Brothers in 1977.
