What Has Changed in the Last Century

Of the three Keenes Collier's set out in 1921, the city has moved farthest: the 11,210 people counted in the 1920 census had grown to roughly 23,000 by the 2020 count, and the town's biggest institution today is Keene State College, which in 1921 was still the small Keene Normal School (founded 1909) and went unmentioned. The woolen mills and railway repair shops that Collier's named as its economic backbone are gone, replaced by education, health care and services. Laura Keene's dates have been tidied by later research "born in England, in 1820" is now usually given as 1826, and the theater where her company was playing on 14 April 1865, Ford's, was restored and reopened as a working stage and museum in 1968. Charles Samuel Keene's entry stands essentially as written; his pen drawings for Punch are still admired by illustrators, with Degas and Pissarro among his early champions.
