He lost his Senate seat in 1922, became ambassador to Britain and then Secretary of State in 1925, and gave his name to the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact, in which more than sixty states renounced war as an instrument of national policy; he received the Nobel Peace Prize for it in 1929 and later sat as a judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague, dying in 1937. Vernon Lyman Kellogg, described here as a Stanford entomologist doing relief work in Belgium, went on to serve as the first permanent secretary of the National Research Council. The Book of Kells is still at Trinity College Dublin, though it was rebound into four volumes in the 1950s and is now published in full facsimile and online.
