What Has Changed in the Last Century
Collier's called Kendal a "market-town of Westmoreland" of 14,033 people in 1918; Westmorland ceased to be an administrative county in 1974, when Kendal passed to Cumbria, and since 2023 it has sat in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness. The population is now roughly double the 1918 figure, at about 28,000, and of the industries listed only snuff survives in any strength — Kendal is better known today as a walkers' gateway to the Lake District and for Kendal mint cake, while its shoe and leather trade has gone. The claim that the ruined castle was "the birthplace of Catharine Parr" is now treated with scepticism by historians, who think Henry VIII's last queen was more likely born to the family's southern household. Madge Kendal, listed as "Retired in 1908", lived until 1935 and was honoured as a Dame in the 1920s.
