What Has Changed in the Last Century
The largest change concerns Francis Scott Key: when Collier's wrote in 1921, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was a popular patriotic song but not the national anthem, which Congress made it only on March 3, 1931. Modern reference works also give Key's birth as August 1, 1779, rather than the August 9, 1780 printed here, and his record as a slaveholder and District attorney has since drawn sharp scrutiny eing's was toppled in 2020. Ellen Key, alive and abroad when the entry was written, died in 1926 at Strand, her house on Lake Vättern; the "unwarranted abuse" of her views on love and marriage has given way to her standing as a founding figure of Swedish feminism and progressive child-rearing. The Key or Ki islands are now the Kei Islands of Indonesia's Maluku province, Dutch colonial rule having ended in 1949, and the mechanical key of lock and piano now shares its name with the plastic card, fob and phone-based keyless entry.
