What Has Changed in the Last Century
When Collier's wrote this in 1921 it could state flatly that Landseer "took the very highest" rank among animal painters; within a generation his sentimental Victorian subjects — the loyal dog, the noble stag — had become the standard example of everything modern taste rejected, and his prices collapsed. His reputation was only partly rehabilitated by scholarly reassessment and a major Tate retrospective in 1981-82, which treated him as a serious painter of Victorian anxieties rather than a purveyor of pet portraits. The four bronze lions at the base of Nelson's Column remain among the most photographed sculptures in London, and "The Monarch of the Glen" — long used to advertise whisky — was bought for the National Galleries of Scotland in 2017 for £4 million after a public appeal. Collier's list of works still serves; it is the confident ranking that has not survived.
