What Has Changed in the Last Century
When Collier's wrote this in 1921 Andrew Lang had been dead only nine years (he died in 1912), and the entry lists him as a poet, essayist and author of "Custom and Myth" and "Letters to Dead Authors" — with no mention of the work he is now known for. Today Lang survives almost entirely through the twelve colour Fairy Books, beginning with the Blue Fairy Book of 1889, which remain continuously in print, while his verse and literary essays are little read. His anthropological arguments about myth and folklore, once fought out in public against Max Müller and later against Frazer's school, are now studied as a chapter in the history of the discipline rather than as live theory, and the Butcher-and-Lang prose "Odyssey" has been displaced by later translations. The biographical facts in the entry — Selkirk, 31 March 1844, Edinburgh Academy, St Andrews, Balliol — still stand.
