What Has Changed in the Last Century
Collier's in 1921 described Lansing as a farming trade center making "agricultural implements, flour, stoves, and knit goods" — but the entry misses what was already transforming the town: Ransom E. Olds had built Oldsmobile and REO there, and Lansing spent the twentieth century as a General Motors town. Oldsmobile, the oldest surviving American car marque, was shut down by GM in 2004, though GM still assembles vehicles in the Lansing area. The city has grown from about 31,000 in 1910 to roughly 112,000 today, with Michigan State University, unmentioned above, just next door in East Lansing. Robert Lansing, whom Collier's leaves practising law after Wilson forced his resignation, died in 1928; his nephews John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles later ran the State Department and the CIA.
