What Has Changed in the Last Century

Collier's in 1921 left J. Hamilton Lewis as a senator "defeated for re-nomination in 1918"; in fact he won the seat back in 1930, served from 1931 until his death in August 1939, and is remembered as the first party whip in Senate history, appointed in 1913. Meriwether Lewis's death near Nashville, given here as Oct. 8, 1809, is now dated Oct. 11 at Grinder's Stand on the Natchez Trace, and whether it was suicide or murder is still argued, with a family petition to exhume the grave refused by the National Park Service. Of the 385-acre Lewis and Clark Exposition grounds at Portland, almost nothing survives: the great Forestry Building, the last major structure, burned in 1964 and the Guild's Lake site was filled in for industry. The island of Lewis is now governed from Stornoway by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Western Isles council created in 1975, and is one of the last strongholds of Scottish Gaelic.
