What Has Changed in the Last Century

Collier's described Lewiston, Idaho in 1921 as a wheat and fruit town of 6,574 on the Snake–Clearwater junction; the completion of the lower Snake River dams in 1975 made it a slackwater seaport, the farthest-inland Pacific port in the United States, and its population is now above 34,000. The "State normal school" is now Lewis-Clark State College. Lewiston, Maine, then 31,791 and turning out cotton, woolen goods and shoes, lost its textile industry over the following decades; the Bates Mill complex was redeveloped rather than run, and since 2001 the city has been reshaped by Somali and other African immigration. Maine's Lewiston is still the state's second-largest city, still home to Bates College, and was the site of a mass shooting on 25 October 2023 in which 18 people were killed.
