What Has Changed in the Last Century
When Collier's wrote in 1921 that Margate "has for many years been a favorite seaside resort" with a population of about 30,000, the English seaside holiday was near its peak; Dreamland, the amusement park that came to symbolise the town, opened that very decade. Cheap package flights to the Mediterranean from the 1960s onwards gutted that trade, and Margate spent the late twentieth century as a byword for seaside decline, with Dreamland closing in 2003. The municipal borough itself no longer exists: local government reorganisation in 1974 folded Margate into the district of Thanet. Regeneration has since turned on art and nostalgia rather than bathing machines, with the Turner Contemporary gallery opening in 2011 and a restored Dreamland reopening in 2015. (Note that the text above is an OCR jumble: after the first two lines it runs into unrelated entries on Margaret of Anjou, Margaret of Navarre and the margay cat.)
