What Has Changed in the Last Century
Collier's, writing in 1921, could describe George W. Norris only as a Nebraska congressman turned senator; he went on to serve in the Senate until 1943 and to give his name to the Norris he the the the the the Norris The Norris–La Guardia Act of 1932, the Twentieth ("lame duck") Amendment he pushed through in 1933, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, whose first great dam was named Norris Dam for him. Frank Norris, dead at 32 in 1902, has fared better than the 1921 notice suggests: "McTeague" (1899) and "The Octopus" (1901) are now standard texts of American naturalism, and "The Octopus" was filmed and endlessly anthologized. The third volume of his wheat trilogy, which Collier's calls "The Wolf... left unfinished," was in fact never written beyond his plans, so the trilogy remains permanently two-thirds complete. The two Pennsylvania and Swedish places tangled into this page have moved in opposite directions: Norristown has stayed near 30,000-35,000 people, while Norrköping has grown from 58,000 in 1917 to well over 100,000.
