What Has Changed in the Last Century
Collier's in 1921 held Lord North "largely responsible for the measures that brought about the loss of the American colonies" ing that verdict has softened: since the mid-20th century historians have credited North with competent Treasury management and spread the blame for the American war across George III, the cabinet and Parliament, noting that North repeatedly tried to resign and was kept in office by the king until March 1782. The bare facts stand ut he was born in 1732, was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1767, headed the ministry from 1770, and succeeded as 2nd Earl of Guilford in 1790, dying in 1792. The second North on the page, the statistician Simon Newton Dexter North, was still living when Collier's wrote; he died in 1924, and the American Statistical Association he had led in 1910 is still active, as is the permanent Census Bureau he directed from 1903 to 1909.
