What Has Changed in the Last Century

The 1921 Collier's account survives here only as garbled scanned text, but it describes the Nova Scotia of its day: a province of roughly half a million people whose wealth lay in coal, fish, timber and shipbuilding. Coal and steel are gone. Cape Breton's last working colliery, the Prince mine, closed in 2001, the same year the Sydney steel works shut, leaving the Sydney Tar Ponds as one of Canada's largest contaminated sites to be cleaned up. The province now has just over a million residents, nearly half of them in the Halifax region, and its economy runs on services, tourism, shipbuilding contracts and fishing, with Cape Breton linked to the mainland by the Canso Causeway since 1955.
