What Has Changed in the Last Century
All four men were dead or elderly when Collier's compiled this in 1921, and the bare facts of their lives stand as recorded. What the entry leaves out is the episode John Boyle O'Reilly is now best remembered for: after his own 1869 escape from Western Australia he helped plan the 1876 Catalpa rescue, in which an American whaler carried six imprisoned Fenians out of Fremantle to freedom. His reputation has narrowed since 1921 — the volumes of verse Collier's lists are little read, while his Boston memorial by Daniel Chester French and his standing as a symbol of the Irish-American emigrant keep his name alive. The three bishops, whose careers the entry describes as still in progress, all ended their episcopates in the decades after publication.
