Ibrahim Pasha
a viceroy of Egypt; born in Cavella, Albania, in 1789. He was stepson and successor of Mehemet Ali. In 1819 he became generalissimo of the Egyptian army. Ibsen
HENRIK (ib'sen), a Norwegian novelist and dramatist; born in Skien, Norway, in 1828. His youth was passed in extreme poverty. At 16 he left school and became an apprentice in a drug store at Grimstad. He made several unsuccessful literary attempts, 1851, abandoned medicine, and finally, in was appointed by Ole Bull director of the National Theater at Bergen. In 1858 he became artistic director of the His Norwegian Theater at Christiania. best known dramas are: "The Doll's House " "Brand," "Hedda Gabler," "Ghosts," and "Pillars of Society." His plays are noted for discussions of social matters. He died May 22, 1906.

Ice (ARTIFICIAL with an elaborate)
ARTIFICIAL with an elaborate system of apparatus. The ice is cleared trom snow by means of an implement called the snow-plane. An ice-plow, drawn by horses, and driven by a man riding on it, or propelled by steam, is then made to cut deep parallel grooves in the ice, and these are again crossed by other grooves at right angles, so that the whole of the surface is deeply marked out into small squares measuring a little more than three feet. A few of these square blocks being de-- tached by handsaws, the remainder are easily broken off with crowbars, and floated away to the ice-storehouses, which are usually built of wood, on the borders of the lake or river. The blocks of ice are covered up with sawdust, a layer being placed between each tier of blocks. Many of these ice-houses are made large enough to hold from 40,000 to 80,000 tons of ice. Throughout the States, except in the extreme N., the manufacture of artificial ice is extensively carried on. The building of ice-edifices was, and perhaps still is, a winter amusement in Russia; and in the New World, Montreal sets the example of an annual ice-carnival, one of the features of which is the building of a great ice-palace, and of icemonuments of various kinds.

Ice Box
A box or chamber used when adjusting chronometers and fine watches for temperature. It is usually built in the form of a double box, the ice being placed between the two boxes and both boxes hermetically sealed, so that the movement may not come in contact with damp air. The outer box is provided with a drain pipe for carrying off the water and plate glass is inserted in the front of each box, so that the movement may be viewed without removing it from the box. The cover of the inner box should not be removed for at least two hours after it has been removed from the ice chamber in order to protect the steel work from rust caused by the condensation of the air in the cold metal.
