Libellus Merlini
(Little Book of Merlin .) A Latin tract on the subject of the prophecies of Merlin written by Geoffrey of Monmouth about 1135. Geoffrey prefaces his account of the prophecies with one concerning the deeds of a supernatural youth named Ambrosius whom he deliberately confounded with Merlin. Vortigern, King of the Britons, asks Ambrose Merlin the meaning of a vision in which appear two dragons red and white in combat. Merlin replies that the Red Dragon signifies the British race which would be conquered by the Saxon, represented by the White Dragon. A long prophetic rhapsody follows, relating chiefly to the Saxon wars, and with this the work, as given in the Seventh Book of Geoffrey's Historia Regum Britanniae, concludes. It was, however, known in Iceland before 1218 in a form independent of the Historia. (H. C. Leach, Modern Philology, viii., pp. 607 et seq.) This tract must not be confounded with the Vita Merlini (1145 or 1148) generally attributed to Geoffrey.

Liberal Republican Party

This platform and these nominations were adopted by the regular , Democratic convention of that year but dissensions arose, and other candidates were nominated, the result being that , General Grant, the Republican lican nominee mawas elected by an overwhelming jority and the Liberal Republican Party was thereafter practically dead.

Liberals
in British politics, a new party name for the Whigs. Since the assumption of the name the Liberals have been "in" about three-fourths of the time. The Conservatives have been in power just enough to keep the Liberals up to their best work. The ministries of Grey, Melbourne, Russell, Aberdeen, Palmerston, Gladstone, and Rosebery were Liberal. Gladstone is without doubt the most prominent statesman produced by the Liberal Party. Among the important measures carried by the Liberals are the extension of the franchise; the emancipation of West Indian slaves; wholesome factory laws; the abolition of the pillory and the whipping post; the establishment of public schools; the adoption of free trade ; a more just treatment of Ireland; and, in short, the long and honorable list of reforms that have kept the United Kingdom in the forefront for nearly a century.

Liberty Party
THE, in the United States, grew out of the Antisummit of Pike's Peak, and in a special slavery Society, and was more widely vacuum room at the Bureau of Standards, both of which preliminary tests were passed satisfactorily. The Liberty motor is a twelve cylinder, Vtype motor of five inch bore by seven inch stroke, with a cubic capacity of 905 inches. The angle between the cylinders is 45°, which produces a rigid motor, and offers less resistance to the air than the generally used 60° angle. The motor is made up of individual steel cylinders. Until this motor was introduced, this country had not manufactured many successful steel cylindered motors, cast iron being the usual material. The early cylinders were bored from steel castings, which was a slow and expensive process, but the Ford Motor Company soon introduced a method of forging the cylinders out of seamless steel tubing, which by means of cylinder presses and bulldozknown for the persistent agitation of its adherents than for its numbers. In 1840 it nominated James G. Birney, secretary of the Anti-slavery Society for president, casting 7,059 votes; and again, in 1844, when he received 62,- 300 votes. Libitina
An ancient Italian divinity, identified IOOO CLASSICAL CHARACTERS by the later Romans with Persephone ( Proserpina ), on account of her connection with the dead and their burial. At her temple at Rome everything necessary for funerals was kept, and persons might there either buy or hire such things.
