GUSTAV (folk'mär), a Hersfeld, Hesse, Germany, Jan. 11, 1809. He was Professor of Theology in the University of Zürich. His principal works are: an edition of "The Gospel and his Relation to of Marcion" (1852 ); "Justin Martyr (1853 ); "Sources of the History of Heresies down to the Nicene Council," Gospels" vol. i., "Hippolytus and the Philosophumena" (1853 ); "Religion of Jesus and Its First Development" (1857); "Origin of our Gospels " (1866); "Life and Works of Zwingli" (1870); "Myths of the Popes" (1873); "The Synoptics Jesus" (1877); "Jesus of Nazareth and and the Historical Facts of the Life of the Early Christian Times" (1882); "Paul from Damascus to the Epistle to the Galatians" (1887). Zurich, Switzerland, Jan. 10, 1893. He died in (vol-ná); family name VOLNEY, CONSTANTIN DE, COUNT CHASSEBŒUF (shasbuhf), a French philosopher and 1757. He published in 1787 his "Travels traveler; born in Craon, France, Feb. 3 , description of them to that date. In in Egypt and Syria" (2 vols.), the best States-General. In 1791 he produced a 1789 he was elected a deputy to the rests-"Ruins; or, Meditations on the work on which his fame principally Revolutions of Empires." Imprisoned in in the United States, publishing in 1803 1792, on his release he passed two years Soil" of the country. Among his other his "Description of the Climate and works Physical Principles of Morality" (1793), and "Researches in Ancient History" (3 vols. 1814). He died in Paris, April are: "The Natural Law; or, 25, 1820. of Archangel and N. of Kostroma; area, VOLOGDA , a province of Russia, S. 155,498 square miles. Its surface is mostly a vast plain, becoming hilly toward the S., and mountainous toward the E., where the Urals expand into a wild highland tract. Only in the S. of the province is agriculture possible. Most of the province lies in the great forest zone, and 87 per cent. of its surface is covered with pine woods. Vologda is drained chiefly by the Dwina and its tributaries toward the White Sea; the Petchora flows through the N. E. part to the Arctic Ocean. Hunting and fishing are almost the only employments in the major portion of this province. Salt, skins, and iron are exported. Pop. about 1,500,000.
