What Has Changed in the Last Century
All three men were still living, or barely dead, when Collier's compiled these notes in 1921. Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield, listed simply as "an American educator," died at Princeton on 16 February 1921, and is now remembered far beyond his editorship of the "Presbyterian and Reformed Review" as the last great voice of the Old Princeton theology and the chief architect of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy; his collected works are still reprinted and argued over in conservative Protestant seminaries. His brother Ethelbert Dudley Warfield stayed at Wilson College into the 1910s and died in 1936, his historical writing now little read. David Warfield, whose triumphs in "The Music Master" and "The Return of Peter Grimm" the entry records, played Shylock for David Belasco in 1922 and then left the stage almost entirely, dying in 1951 with his name on a San Francisco theatre rather than in theatrical memory.
