Tiryns
An ancient town in Argolis, southeast of Argos, and one of the most ancient in all Greece, it is said to have been founded by Proetus, the brother of Acrisius, who built the massive walls of the city with the help of the Cyclopes. Proetus was succeeded by Perseus; and it was here that Hercules was brought up. Hence we find his mother, Alcmena, called Tirynthia, and the hero himself Tirynthius. The remains of the city are some of the most interesting in all Greece, and are, with those of Mycenae, the most ancient specimens of what is called Cyclopean architecture. 284 IOOO CLASSICAL CHARACTERS
