Long, William Joseph

William Joseph (1867-), an American clergyman and author. He was born at North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Harvard and of the Andover Theological Seminary. His books have to do with animal life. The author is particularly gifted in making real personalities of the animals whose history and habits he presents. Ways of Wood Folk, Wilderness Ways, Secrets of the Woods, Fowls of the Air, Beasts of the Field, and School of the Woods, are all entertaining and instructive reading. Though criticized by John Burroughs and Theodore Roosevelt, no stories of animals have been written which are more successful in inspiring young people with sympathy for animals and a desire to study them at first hand.
