King (HORATIO an American statesman)

HORATIO, an American statesman; born in Paris, Me., June 21, 1811; learned the printer's trade; clerk in the postoffice department in Washington in 1839; first assistant postmastergeneral in 1854; was postmaster-general January-March, 1861; was the first man in public office to deny the power of a State to withdraw from the Union. His publications include "An Oration before the Union Literary Society of Washington" (1841); and "Sketches of Travel; cr Twelve Months in Europe" (1878).
